EVO+ EN54 Part 13 Approved

At Nittan Europe Ltd, we are committed to developing systems with the highest standards of reliability and performance.

EN54-13 is the latest European standard that ensures optimal fire system performance, and Nittan’s evo+ fire control panels are fully approved and certified. To gain approval, third party testing was undertaken by an independent “Notified Body” test laboratory to prove the individual Nittan evolution devices as component parts all work together when combined into a system with an evo+ panel. In fact, the entire Nittan evo+ range has gained full EN54-13 approval based on rigorous testing at the extremes of system design such as minimum voltage with maximum loop load, plus speed of communication across networked systems to ensure minimum critical response times are achieved. Monitoring for partial open and short circuits, plus cable resistance ensure fault warnings are raised before system performance is jeopardised.

With EN54-13 fast becoming mandatory across Europe, and others using the standard as a “minimum to comply” specification benchmark you and your customer can rest assured when you chose approved Nittan evo+ Fire Panels with premium Nittan evolution devices manufactured to ISO9001:2008 to create an EN53-13 approved system.

PHASE OUT OF OLD STYLE NITTAN FLAME DETECTOR NFD-68-P

Dear Nittan Customer,

In line with our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement of our product lines Nittan Europe Limited introduced the EVC-IR Flame Detector in 2009. At this time the older style NFP-68-P was intended to support spares and maintenance requirements only.

Seven years later we find that sales volumes for the NFD-68-P have reduced substantially. In fact we have reached a point where future component obsolescence has forced us to wind down production of the NFD-68-P and stop manufacturing after the current production run. Rather than re-design, test and approve an old low volume product with new components, Nittan have decided to create a new “Zero Ohm” variant of the EVC-IR. This will be a drop in replacement for the NFP-68-P to cover future spares and maintenance requirements. The new EVC-IR Zero Ohm variant is currently under test for CPR certification at LPCB, and should be available for sale fully approved in the coming weeks.

Please note, once current stocks NFD-68-P are depleted it will be made obsolete.

Based on current sales volumes Nittan Europe have sufficient stocks of NFD-68-P to last approximately 6 months, however this timescale is likely to alter as some customers may choose to stockpile for spares requirements once they become aware. Based on customer feedback to this bulletin, and dependant on component availability, we have an opportunity to manufacture a last time production run in Japan, but once this has concluded, no further production will be possible.

Therefore Nittan are unable to guarantee continuity of supply going forward and for UV critical spares applications, or larger orders of NFD-68-P, I would suggest this bulletin be taken as a “last time buy notice” and orders be placed immediately.

Nittan smoke detectors stop false alarms from e-cigarette vaping


Vaping ManNittan’s Evolution EV-DP Dual Wavelength Photoelectric smoke detectors have been installed in a Southampton pub and live music venue to prevent false alarms caused by vaping.

With the rise of the e-cigarette, which can be smoked in public places such as bars and restaurants, a new, unexpected problem has arisen: false alarms from vaping. The issue of steam causing smoke alarms to false alarm is well documented. Generally speaking, the Infra Red scattered light technology currently used for commercial smoke detectors is unable to distinguish between larger size particles like steam or dust, that are major causes of false alarms, and particles generated by combustion (fire).

E- cigarettes feature a cartridge containing nicotine in a solution of either propylene glycol or glycerine and water. When you suck on the device, a sensor detects the air flow and starts a process to heat the liquid inside the cartridge, so it evaporates to form water vapour. In an enclosed venue where there are a number of people vaping, this can have the same effect as steam on a smoke detector, leading to false alarms.

The legendary Frog & Frigate in Southampton is renowned for being a very lively venue where visitors are encouraged to get on the tables and sing along with the band! Vaping is permitted in this busy venue which has led to false alarm issues. Venue owner Derek Gardener explains the problem: “we have relaxed, fun vibe here and are happy for people to use e-cigarettes inside. However, it has led to the alarms activating, especially when people are vaping right underneath them. We can’t stop people from vaping underneath them and equally we didn’t want to ban vaping.”

Derek turned to Fire and Safety Testing for a solution, which recommended the use of Nittan’s Evolution EV-DP smoke detectors. Owner Derek Fay explains: “Many venues such as this resort to using heat alarms instead of smoke alarms, but the local fire officer would not allow this. He suggested a Multi-Sensor, but the same issue remains as it still looks for smoke and will false alarm. I had read about Nittan’s dual optical detectors resistance to steam in a magazine article and thought they might offer a solution here as the problem was very similar. Vaping is relatively new and neither myself nor Nittan had come across this issue before. I discussed it with the client and he was happy to see if it would work. We swapped the existing alarm devices out of the conventional system with the Nittan ones and there hasn’t been a single false alarm since; that was about six months ago. Its worked beautifully.”

Nittan Evolution EV-DP smoke detectors have been designed to reduce false alarms caused by non-combustion products such as steam, dust and aerosols. Unlike other industry standard (single optical sensor) smoke detectors on the market that claim to distinguish between smoke and non-combustion products, the EV-DP effectively measures the actual particle size in the chamber via its combined IR and blue LED technology. As steam and dust are much larger particles than smoke, the detector won’t false alarm.

With an estimated 2.8 million adults in Great Britain (6% of the adult population) currently using e cigarettes (up from only 700,000 in 2012) and the NHS backing them as an effective quitting aid, their use is likely to continue to increase. With this increase, false alarms caused from vaping is likely to become an issue for entertainment venues. Nittan Evolution EV-DP smoke detectors provide a cost-effective, simple solution.

Each is available for the first time with an option of EN54-17 Short Circuit Isolator (-ve line only). Beacon and Sounder/Beacon options are certified to EN54-23. Sounder products are certified to EN54-3.

All have head removal monitoring, plus all are IP65 Rated making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

PRODUCT OBSOLESCENCE: EV-ABS


Dear Nittan Customer,

In line with Nittan's commitment to continuous improvement of its product range, it is on occasion necessary to make older products obsolete.

The successful introduction of the "new" EV-SDR Base Sounder has resulted in sales of the EV-ABS reducing to an unsustainable level: meaning it is no longer commercially viable. Therefore Nittan has made the EV-ABS Sounder obsolete with immediate effect.

Please note: the EV-SDR Base Sounder is in all respects a direct replacement, with the added advantage that the device base is now an integral part of the product; so you no longer need to purchase an additional device base as was necessary with the EV-ABS.

UNIVERSITY PREVENTS FALSE ALARMS FROM STEAM WITH NITTAN SMOKE DETECTORS

Smoke detectors throughout the University of East Anglia’s (UEA) student accommodation have been replaced with Nittan’s Evolution EV-DP Dual Wavelength Photoelectric smoke detectors to remove issues with false alarms caused by steam that it had been experiencing previously.

4500 Nittan devices, including more than 2500 Nittan EV-DP smoke detectors, have been installed by Global Fire Services Ltd. throughout the 24 accommodation buildings spread across the 320 acre UEA campus.

The University was experiencing around 20 false alarms every week caused by steam escaping from the bathrooms and activating the smoke alarms. Each alarm event has to be checked and verified by security personnel before Fire and Rescue Services will attend. A reduction in false alarms is therefore not just convenient, but also has significant cost and time benefits.

Furthermore, UEA consistently ranks among the best universities in the country for student satisfaction, with its accommodation provision an integral part of this offering. Reducing false alarms – and therefore disruption - within student living areas was regarded as having a role to play in the quality of the overall accommodation.

Greg Smith, Director of Global Fire Services, explains why the decision was made to switch to Nittan alarms: “originally the plan was to relocate the existing detectors further away from the bathrooms. Whilst this would provide the same level of fire protection, it would be quite a costly solution as it would not only involve moving the devices and cables, but also redecorating afterwards to cover up where the alarms had been previously. We were also concerned that the steam would affect these devices in the new location. As the existing alarms were coming to the end of their lives anyway, we recommended instead swapping to Nittan’s EV-DP smoke detectors which easily cope with steam.”

Nittan Evolution EV-DP smoke detectors have been designed to reduce false alarms caused by non-combustion products such as steam, dust and aerosols. Unlike other industry standard (single optical sensor) smoke detectors on the market that claim to distinguish between smoke and non-combustion products, the EV-DP effectively measures the actual particle size in the chamber via its combined IR and blue LED technology. As steam and dust are much larger particles than smoke, the detector won’t false alarm.

This is the first time Nittan smoke detectors have been installed at UEA. An initial on-site demonstration was conducted by Global Fire Services in one of the student rooms to compare the existing manufacturers’ alarms with Nittan’s EV-DP alarms in a real setting. When steam was deliberately built up in the room to test and compare the alarms, only the Nittan EV-DP alarm stayed silent, whilst the existing one went into false alarm. However once even the smallest amount of smoke was introduced, the Nittan detector reacted and went in to alarm as intended.

UEA were impressed with the results and Global Fire Services replaced the smoke alarms in the student accommodation with the Nittan EV-DP detectors in the summer holidays. The installation was completed ahead of schedule. The existing wiring and panels have been used for maximum cost-effectiveness.

12 months on and, according to Steve Edwards, Electrical Design Engineer, Estates and Building Division at UEA, there have been no false alarms due to steam. “All accommodation blocks now have Nittan alarms installed, with further alarms being fitted in to 531 bedrooms. Security is very satisfied with the results.”

Nittan EV-DP alarms are not just highly resistant to false alarms, but come with a number of key features and benefits, including their use of a sophisticated and highly flexible Sine Wave FSK protocol for data transfer to and from the panel. This protocol also allows for substantial amounts of information to be transmitted back to the panel at very high speeds. Furthermore, they come with a 360 degree OMNIVIEW LED indicator, permitting clear and visible indication of the sensor's operation from any angle. Increased EMC immunity is also achieved by the inclusion of a “Bandpass Discriminator Circuit” which is built into every sensor head and loop device.

Nittan has now launched EV-DPH with a combined Heat Sensor to compliment the features of the Dual-Optic Smoke sensor. This is available in either A2R or CS Heat Grades for new Installations.

Fully compliant to EN54 part 2 and 4, the evo+ range includes: single loop, two, four & 8 loop variants, plus repeater options.

The evo+ panels come with 20 programmable zone LED’s, slide-in labels, 25 system LED’s for information purposes, four programmable function buttons with LED indication and two onboard sounder circuits as Standard.

evo+ panels are programmable on-site via the in-built keypad and LCD display or using the Windows based PC-NeT configuration software. Simple “select and click” programming for engineer configuration and end user operation are incorporated for ease of use, along with Auto Learn and on-board Loop Metering and Scope facility for ease of commissioning and fault finding.

Nittan evo+ panels support up to 200 fire zones per Panel, but the system can be expanded up to 2000 fire zones via the Ad-NeT peer to peer network, which supports up to 200 network Nodes. Simply adding a network card allows the panel to communicate with any other evo+ fire panel, remote terminal or network peripherals. The network operates as a true peer to peer system, and can be configured in fault tolerant loop or radial format dependant on network card option chosen. Cause and effect applications can be programmed across the entire network.

The evo+ panels are compatible with the full range of current Nittan evolution devices and each Loop card can support up to 254 devices, including multiple sub-addresses per device for flexible control of functions.

However, whilst the older “+ve” Isolator devices SCI-5 and SCI-6 will operate without trouble on the evo+ panels, this is not recommended as it will limit future device choice to only older +ve isolator styles and not allow use of our new style “-ve” SCI devices for system expansion. To future proof the system we advise use of the Nittan evo+ panel with our latest range of “-ve” Isolator devices.

COASTAL HOTEL & SPA STOPS FALSE ALARMS WITH NITTAN

 

Nittan’s Evolution EV-DP Dual Wavelength Photoelectric smoke detectors have been installed into The Cliff Hotel & Spa in Cardigan, West Wales by Fire and Security Alarms Ltd. (FAS) Carmarthen.

The Cliff Hotel & Spa is a large family-owned hotel featuring 70 en-suite bedrooms, spa and gym facilities, function suite and a golf course.  As part of a hotel wide refurbishment project, the existing fire alarm system has been removed and replaced with a sophisticated Nittan Evolution system featuring 260 Nittan devices, including over 200 EV-DP smoke detectors.  The system runs on four loops controlled by an Advanced Electronics control panel.
 
Nittan Dual Wavelength Photoelectric smoke detectors were selected by installer Fire and Security Alarms Ltd. (FAS) to prevent further issues of false alarms that the hotel had been experiencing previously.  The primary cause of these had been steam escaping from the en-suite bathrooms and activating the smoke alarms.
 
As an NSI Gold, BAFE and NICEIC approved contractor, Fire and Security Alarms Ltd. Nittan Evolution EV-DP smoke detectors have been designed to reduce false alarms caused by non-combustion products such as steam, dust and aerosols.  Unlike other industry standard (single optical sensor) smoke detectors on the market that claim to distinguish between smoke and non-combustion products, the EV-DP effectively measures the actual particle size in the chamber via its combined IR and blue LED technology.  As steam and dust are much larger particles than smoke, the detector won’t give a false alarm.
 
Nittan EV-DP alarms are not just highly resistant to false alarms, but come with a number of key features and benefits, including their use of a sophisticated and highly flexible Sine Wave FSK protocol for data transfer to and from the panel.  This protocol also allows for substantial amounts of information to be transmitted back to the panel at very high speeds.  Furthermore, they come with a 360 degree OMNIVIEW LED indicator, permitting clear and visible indication of the sensor's operation from any angle.  Increased EMC immunity is also achieved by the inclusion of a “Bandpass Discriminator Circuit” which is built into every sensor head and loop device.

Device Choice & Panel Support

 

Dear Nittan Customer,
 
As part of Nittan's continued commitment to improve device choice and panel support we are pleased to announce the availability of our NEW “–ve” Short Circuit Isolator base EV-B-SCI and a DIN rail mount “–ve” Short Circuit Isolator EV-DIN-SCI, both isolate the negative line only.
 
Following the successful expansion of Nittan Evolution support to include all Advanced MXPro5 (MX5000) panel variants. Nittan have taken the decision to not support new devices and additional features on the older MX4000 range. Therefore only the MXPro5 panels have been configured to work with Nittan “-ve” line short circuit isolators.

Whilst the MXPro5 will recognise and work with the “-ve” SCI devices the MX4000 will not.
The MX4000 panels will continue to support existing devices and our older style “+ve” line isolators only. If the new –ve SCI devices are inadvertently installed on an existing MX4000 panel they will not be recognised and will flagged by the panel as an “unknown device”.
 
Whilst the older +ve SCI devices will operate without trouble on the MXPro5 panels, this is not recommended as it will limit future device choice to only older +ve isolator styles and may not be fully supported going forward.
 
Please note: for technical reasons +ve and –ve isolator styles cannot be mixed on a system.
Therefore, Nittan's recommendation is:
 
MX4000 panel
Use Only “+ve SCI” devices such as SCI-5 Base Isolator and SCI-6 Boxed Isolator.
 
MXPro5 panel
Use Only “–ve SCI” devices, such as EV-B-SCI Base Isolator, EV-DIN-SCI DIN Rail mount Isolator plus the soon to be launched MCP c/w Isolator and VAD c/w Isolator devices. In addition all future new Short Circuit Isolator device developments shall be “–ve SCI” only.

Nittan Participates in Royal Visit



Nittan is pleased to have been invited to UK manufacturer Speedboard's 30 year anniversary attended by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, K.G., K.T. earlier this year in Windsor, Berkshire.

Speedboard is one of the UK's leading contract electronic manufacturing and electronics manufacturing services providers. The company produces the PCBs contained in Nittan's smoke detection ranges.

As a key customer, Nittan was kindly invited to attend the celebration and display our smoke detector range for HRH to see. The morning included a tour of the Speedboard factory, a speech by Speedboard's MD Neil Owen and HRH opening a plaque to commemorate 30 years in manufacturing.

Nittan's Evolution Fire Detection Supported By New Advanced Electronics Mx-5000n Control Panel



Nittan Europe, one of the leading companies in the European fire protection industry, is pleased to announce that its Evolution fire detection range is now supported by Advanced Electronics Mx-5100N single loop control panel. This is the first in a full series of Mx-5000N panels to be introduced.

Mx-5000N is the next generation of analogue addressable fire alarm control panels that are fully compliant with EN54 part 2, 4 and 13. The panels have been designed to be flexible and powerful with an intuitive user interface featuring a high resolution LCD display and tactile keypad.

The Mx-5100N, the first in a full Mx-5000N series of Evolution compatible panels, comes complete with a single loop driver card, two on board sounder circuits, 20 programmable zonal LEDs and four dedicated programmable push buttons. It is compatible with the full Evolution range available exclusively from Nittan.

Evolution is the latest advanced, premium fire system developed by Nittan. Evolution uses ASIC technology in the sensors and sophisticated detection algorithms, combining extremely reliable fire detection together with a very high degree of protection against unwanted false alarms. It's advanced, highly flexible protocol, is not only uniquely resistant to noise, but also allows for substantial amounts of information to be transmitted at high speed.

Nittan Europe launches Smoke Sensors with Integral Sounder

 

 

Nittan Europe Limited., a leading UK manufacturer of conventional and addressable fire detection products, has launched a new analogue addressable photoelectric smoke sensor with built in sounder.

Unlike other smoke sensors on the market which require a separate sounder base to be installed which adds to the cost of the installation and takes longer to fit, the Evolution EV-PS optical smoke sensor comes with the sounder fully integrated within the sensor itself. Extremely competitively priced, the EV-PS allows for quick and simple installation, saving both time and money.

But it's not only the installer that benefits from the new EV-PS, as integrating the sounder in the unit makes for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance, with a lower profile for an unobtrusive appearance.

Even with its compact size, the EV-PS still incorporates the latest sophisticated alarm technology for exceptional reliability and performance, including ASIC design, EEPROM addressable capability, low monitoring current and a chemically etched stainless steel insect screen to reduce ingress of insects and airborne contaminants.

For ease of use, the EV-PS features Nittan Europe's OMNIVIEW 360 degree LED fire alarm indicator, permitting clear and visible indication of the sensor's operation from any angle, and a remote indicator output.
